Parkruns are more than just runs—they’re events designed to bring people together. Entirely volunteer-led, these family-friendly gatherings have an incredible, inclusive atmosphere. Whether you’re walking, jogging, or running, you’ll feel supported every step of the way.

Even if it’s your first Parkrun, expect to be greeted with smiles, encouragement, and maybe even a new friend or two. I can count on one hand the events where I didn’t chat with someone—those were on me, as I was focused on chasing a personal best!

One standout feature of Parkrun is its timing system. After each event, you’ll receive a personalized report showing your overall placement, your rank within your age and gender category, and how you’ve improved over time. It’s like having a built-in accountability buddy, helping you stay motivated to return each week.

How to Get Started

Here’s all you need to do to join the fun:

  1. Register online. Find your country (click here) and follow the instructions. If you’re in Ireland, you can register here.
  2. Print your barcode. Alternatively, save it on your phone or, if you have a smartwatch, store it there. But remember Parkrun’s motto: No barcode, no result!
  3. Find your local event. Choose one close to home or make an adventure of visiting a new location.
  4. Check the start time. It’s always worth checking your selected Parkrun’s start time. While some start at 9 a.m., others will start at 9.30 a.m.

And that’s it! Just show up, and you’re ready to go.

What to Wear for a Parkrun

One of the best things about Parkrun is its simplicity—there’s no need for fancy gear. You’ll see participants in everything from high-performance running outfits to everyday trainers and hoodies. Here are my tips for a comfortable run:

  • Top: For winter runs, opt for a long-sleeve top and dress for the weather. A hoodie or light jacket works well for drizzly mornings, though I personally prefer running without a jacket. Thermal tops are also a great choice.
  • Bottoms: Wear whatever you’re comfortable moving in—leggings, joggers, or shorts if it’s mild.
  • Socks: While pricey running socks are great, don’t overthink it if you’re just starting. Avoid cotton socks to minimize blisters from sweat and friction.
  • Shoes: Any comfortable pair of trainers will do, especially if you’re walking more than running. Don’t stress about cushioning or weight—just pick a pair that feels good for a 5km.
  • Accessories: Winter calls for gloves, a beanie (or cap—just watch out for the wind!), and maybe even sunglasses if the skies are clear. Earphones are optional but keep in mind they can isolate you from the friendly Parkrun community.

The Social Side of Parkrun

Parkrun isn’t just about running—it’s about community. Many events wrap up with a visit to a nearby café, where you can warm up with a coffee, chat with fellow runners, and celebrate your progress. If you’re skipping the coffee stop, pack a bottle of water to rehydrate after your run.

Why Moms Should Give Parkrun a Try

As a mom or mom-to-be, it’s easy to feel like running isn’t for you. But Parkrun is designed to welcome everyone, regardless of fitness level or experience. It’s an opportunity to focus on your physical and mental health while being part of a supportive community.

Imagine the example you’re setting for your family when they see you prioritizing health and embracing challenges. Whether you’re walking, jogging, or running the full 5k, every step you take is a step toward a healthier, more confident you.

So why not lace up your trainers and join your first Parkrun this Saturday? Your future self will thank you—and so will your family.
